LEBRON JAMES...

OPENS NEW SCHOOL TO HELP AT-RISK STUDENTS IN OHIO

LeBron James Opens New School to Help At-Risk Students in Ohio

On Monday, more than 200 at-risk students in Akron, Ohio, walked into a stately brick building decorated inside with inspirational quotes, murals of historic black leaders, and 114 pairs of sneakers worn by LeBron James. This renovated facility was designed to meet the specific challenges that these kids face—both inside and outside of the classroom—and was created by LeBron James, himself.
More than a school, the institution takes a holistic approach to serving children who are growing up in disenfranchised communities just like James did. “I know these kids, basically more than they know themselves,” said James in a video released Sunday. “I’ve walked these same streets. I’ve rode the same bikes on the streets they ride on. I went through the same emotions—the good, the bad, the adversity. Everything these kids are going through—the drugs, the violence, the guns, everything they’re going through as kids, I know.”

The inaugural group included 240 third and fourth graders divided into classes of 20 students each. The non-charter school plans to expand each year, opening up to second and fifth graders in 2019 and, eventually, all grades between first and eighth by 2022.
James, who was raised in a single-parent home in Ohio by a teenage mother, expressed his excitement to open the I Promise School in a tweet that also revealed how many days of school he missed as a fourth grader due to personal family struggles.

The three-time NBA champ created the school as an extension of the LeBron James Family Foundation, which reached out to the Akron Public Schools board back in November for assistance in designing a curriculum for students who are lagging behind in their studies and struggling at home. In addition, the board ensured the school met proper educational standards while LeBron served as the primary donor.

The school, which will operate from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. July through May, will focus on accelerated learning to bring kids up to speed. It will provide students with intervention services, extracurricular activities to keep them busy, and bicycles, a tool that James has said played a huge role in helping him escape dangerous parts of his neighborhood. Additionally, the school will offer parents an on-site food pantry as well as educational, career, and emotional support.
“We are going to be that groundbreaking school that will be a nationally recognized model for urban and public school excellence,” said I Promise principal and Akron native Brandi Davis, according to USA Today. “We are letting people know it is about true wrap-around support, true family integration and true compassion.”
LeBron James
Keith Liechty-Clifford, the Akron Public Schools’ liaison to James’ foundation, said students were randomly selected from a pool of Akron students whose reading levels were a year or two behind the standards. “LeBron went to a public school. He went to Akron public schools,” said Liechty-Clifford, reports The L.A. Times. “It was the community that helped him and his mother, Gloria, it was teachers, it was administrators. It was important for the foundation to help us and to look at something bigger. Look at our community and change urban education across the country.”
Michele Campbell, the executive director of James’ foundation, said that even if the students don’t make it to the NBA, the I Promise School will empower them to “become the LeBron James of their passion and dream in life.”

Zen Night Block Party

Every 4th Friday. Cruelty-free food and product vendors.  Come on out and join us next month. Mark your calendars. Here are a few pics from the event. The Major Taylor Phoenix Riders were in the house.

TBL Major Taylor Phoenix Riders ready to rock and roll over to Zen Nights Block Party.

Ran into Craig Dunker who suggested this outing on one of our night rides.

Keith was coming out of the Barbershop where his artwork was on display and as we rode by he shouted out I ride.  So you know we stopped and chatted a bit and look forward to him riding with us soon.

The DJ in here was putting it down...they have shoes and clothes her too.

Some of Keith's artwork.

Let the block party begin.  Cruelty-free vendors and products everywhere.

Chon Thai was the hook up. They had a line all night.

Drew and his family rolled in in style.

Time to dismount and enjoy the Zen Block Party.

Yep. Mobil pit for pizza.

We were treated to some meditation for the soul.

Now the ride home was epic. You would have had to be there as we cruised the streets of Mesa enjoying the night air as we had some fun rolling back to Circle K and found ourselves wanting more.  So stay tuned for the next cycling outing with TBL Major Taylor Phoenix Riders.

Peace

How well do you know word?

THIS TEEN KNOWS MICROSOFT WORD BETTER THAN YOU EVER WILL

A teen from Cary, North Carolina, won the distinction as one of the best users of Microsoft Word in the country.
15-year-old Jesse Ssengonzi along with several other young people aged 13 to 22, beat out 147 other finalists at the 2018 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) U.S. National Championship. He won first place for his proficiency at Word, while other young people took titles as champs of PowerPoint and Excel.
According to a press release from Certiport, an IT-certification exam provider and host of the competition, “147 finalists were given a printed copy of a document, spreadsheet, or presentation to re-create along with printed instructions and digital assets. They were then scored according to the accuracy of the re-creation compared to the original. The champions in each program, along with a chaperone, have won a trip to participate in the 2018 MOS World Championship in Orlando, Florida.”
As a first-place winner, Ssengonzi won $3,000, a medal of achievement, a trophy, a winner’s certificate, and an all-expenses paid trip to the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship being held this upcoming weekend.
“We’re so impressed by all of these students—they’ve proven they can use Microsoft Office tools effectively which will be a key to successful academic and career pursuits,” said Raymond Murray, Vice President, Business Development, Pearson VUE in a released statement. “Our goal is to turn these students from learners to earners, and many of them go on to win internships and jobs as a result of proving their skills in Microsoft Office.”
When he was announced the winner Sengonzu said it was “surreal.”
“I didn’t expect to be called on. I thought I did well but I was kind of nervous. So, yeah I was really happy,” he said.
On how he prepared for the contest he says he practiced a lot even after school and took the certification multiple times.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are business software solutions in Microsoft’s flagship Office suite and Office 365 product. Word may be the most widely-used word-processing software in businesses. Excel is spreadsheet-creating software capable of advanced calculations, and PowerPoint is used to create slideshows.
Certification centers such as Certipost offer timed examinations that show extreme knowledge of a software or technology. Holding such certifications can often help individuals advance in IT or business careers.

No Flats Today!

No flats and a great ride today.   Rising early allow me to catch some nice sunrises..One ride at a time. It's a process. consistency is the key. Just as the previous article suggests, no excuse.  I'm responsible and you are too.

The ride was capped off with some of natures sunshine. Fresh squeezed. .25/lb and a hand press work wonders.  Have a great day!

Flats and Watermelon

I had a very good ride today. Rode past the Uber pickup from yesterday. Got a couple of climbs in and headed home. About 6 miles from home got that funny feeling my rims were rolling on asphalt. They were.

Quick pit stop and on my way.

I had half a watermelon waiting for me as my post-ride meal.  Man was it good. After that it was freshen up and nap time......

Have a wonderful Day!  Peace

Flats Happen.....and it's still a Great Day!

Yep. I was on my way to meet the cycling group this morning.  Clean bike an all. 400 meters from the spot I have a flat.  I slow roll to the meetup and two tubes and 2 C02 cartridges later I'm ready to roll.....

Morning crew with Major Taylor Phoenix Rides are ready to hit the streets.  We would have left at 0515 but somebody had a flat.  [clears throat]

About halfway through the ride...... can you say Uber

So the crew rides on as I head home.  So the tube is repaired and now its time to head out and get some more tubes.

A final note for the morning.  This is the desert. No rain in the forecast. As I'm patching the tube at home I hear Boom.......Boom......you know, thunder......and then the rain comes pouring down.  Mother Nature runs things, not the weather forecasters.......

Peace
